Claustrophobia is a specific phobia where the sufferer fears having no escape from a particular place or situation.  It is commonly associated with, but in fact separate from, “clithrophobia”, which is the fear of being in an enclosed space.

Claustrophobia can be classified as an anxiety disorder, one that is best understood as incorporating two key fears: restriction and suffocation.  One usually follows on from the other: once a claustrophobic feels restricted to a certain area, they will often fear suffocation from a lack of air in that area.

ClaustrophobiaWe should be clear that claustrophobics are not necessarily afraid of the area itself, but rather what might happen to them if they were to be confined to that area.

Typical situations where claustrophobics fear restriction include the following: elevators, subway trains, locked rooms, small rooms, tunnels, caves, cellars, and crowded areas.  In the more extreme cases of claustrophobia, the fear of restriction can even permeate into seemingly more benign places and situations, such as waiting in a queue in a store, or sitting in a dentist’s chair.

If the duration of the claustrophobia is sufficiently long, the sufferer may end up having a full blown anxiety or panic attack.  As a behavioral consequence, severe claustrophobics will do everything they can to avoid being in these situations in the first place.

One study indicates that between 2-5% of the global population suffers from severe claustrophobia, but only a very small percentage of those sufferers receive any specific treatment for it.

How to stop claustrophobia controlling your life

There is no reason to put up with claustrophobia as part of your daily existence.  As with all anxiety conditions, it can be effectively treated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), without the need for potentially dangerous medications.

But we all know that attending individual sessions with a therapist can end up being prohibitively expensive.

Panic Away Thankfully there is an affordable, effective solution that teaches you to use CBT techniques to eliminate the feelings of anxiety and panic associated with claustrophobia:
