Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by “panic attacks”, which are feelings of intense anxiety and fear, that “snowball” into a state of panic.  These feelings are usually accompanied by physical symptoms such as sweating, heart palpitations, trembling, chest pain and tingling sensations.

Panic disorder is not the same as agoraphobia, but the two conditions are closely linked.  As many as one in three panic disorder sufferers go on to develop agoraphobia a consequence of repeated panic attacks.
